Sensation play is a BDSM term referring to exploring intense sensation, for erotic purposes. The purpose of a sensation play scenes is simply to create the desired physical sensations, as opposed to other types of BDSM play which may be designed to evoke a particular emotion such as fear or submission. Sensation play may or may not involve pain. In fact, sensation play may not involve BDSM as such at all, since the term might be used to include everything from:
- Two partners exploring the sensations of kissing or other intimacy while blindfolded
- Unusual textures such as feathers, silk, or leather
- Erotic tickling
- Sensory deprivation such as mummification
- Contact with intense temperatures, such as ice or hot wax
- Biting and clawing
- Whips, flogging, bondage suspension and other BDSM related activities.
Although creating a particular emotion is not the point of sensation play, it can still be very intense emotionally as well as physically.
