Shoeplay is a term commonly used by foot fetishist to describe the action of removing one's shoes (almost exclusively in a public place, such as a school, library, store, office, etc.) by slipping their feet out of them underneath a table or while standing. It also defines the actions that may follow, such as twirling the removed shoe(s) around with the feet or constantly slipping the feet in and out of a shoe(s). Though it is a common practice, esp. of women who wear uncomfortable shoes and of school-aged girls who generally wear their tennis shoes very loose or untied (possibly to directly facilitate shoeplay) this seemingly innocent and oft times subconscious action is of great sexual stimulus to one with a foot or shoeplay fetish. The person with the fetish may also gain sexual pleasure from playing with his or her own shoes in the same manner.
Though shoeplay and foot fetishism are predominantly male, it has recently been speculated that more females may also have such a fetish as some seem to enjoy watching other women or girls play with their shoes, regardless of sexual orientation. It has also been proposed that the fact that so many school-aged (particularly teenaged) girls of today wear their shoes loose or wear shoes that make shoeplay almost inevitable (such as flip-flops or backless shoes) suggest that in playing with their own shoes they are satisfying their fetish. Some males do this as well, though not quite as commonly.
When questioned, the majority of shoeplayers (both male and female) will reply that they play with their shoes subconsciously, with no knowledge that their actions may be serving as a sexual stimulus for someone else who happens to be watching them. However, a minority will admit to the fact that they do indeed play with their shoes to be flirty or attract members of the opposite sex.
The reason watching someone play with their shoes proves to be sexually exciting to so many people is one of considerable debate. However, it has been speculated that playing with one's shoes is a social taboo (as it is generally inappropriate to remove the shoes or expose the feet in public) and thus is appealing to the onlooker and possibly to the person performing the action. Also, as most women and young girls play with their shoes as a way of relieving discomfort in their feet, particularly when wearing constricting shoes (such as high heels) it is also viable to assume that the fetishist may be attracted to the vulnerability of the shoeplayer, who is "admitting defeat" by removing their shoes, proving that they can take the pain no longer.
Shoeplay is a common form of fetishism among both males and females and is closely tied to foot fetishism, which can make determining it individually quite difficult.
